Occupancy data now provided

The first of our occupancy data is now available for searching. We have uploaded information from the census for ten streets. Next we will add data from the directories for the same ten streets and, in time, both census and directory data for additional streets.

To see this information, go to Occupancy data.

Thanks Amy, for all your hard work tweaking the IT system :-)

ISBN numbered histories ready

We have now completed the remaking of the histories with ISBN numbers and we will be uploading these to the website over the Christmas holidays. In due course, another print run will see local people in our 2010/11 targeted streets circulated with free copies of the histories.

The content of the histories will also be made available as html on the MHMS website but those looking at the information on the live pages will not experience the very fine page layouts put together for us by Cyrill Studer our designer. Many thanks Cyrill.

ISBN numbers for histories

Feedback from the formal launch of the printed MHMS street histories has been great - just the regrettable typo misspelling North Laine as North Lane blemishing an otherwise wholly positive week!

Many people have contacted us to express their pleasure at receiving a detailed street history and we have been encouraged to provide the publications with ISBN numbers.

Updated copies of the histories will appear very shortly marked with the ISBN-13 numbering system, thereby providing an accurate and reliable way to search for a volume/edition.

Oh, horrible error!

At the launch of the street histories the other day we discovered a regrettable typo on a number of the publications. Very embarrassingly, the central historical area of Brighton known as the North Laine had become the North Lane! This occurred because the covers of the histories were printed as graphics files, hence there was no spell check and our wonderful designer, who is Swiss, was not familiar enough with local history to pick up on the error!

Now this is far from a small matter, it took a great deal of effort to reintroduce the historical name for the area and ensuring correct usage remains a significant issue.

One local emailed us to complain, saying:

REALLY?? I thought MHMS was interested in accurate local history. Can this really have gone out to residents and traders around the North Laine area? I am gobsmacked! . . . I am really saddened by this, . . . we are constantly campaigning to have our area referred to by the correct name and spelling. Now the MHMS project is counteracting all our efforts!

Of course, we too ARE very concerned to ensure that the name is correctly applied and as soon as we discovered the problem we pulped the covers and started again. So, if you retain one of the launch copies keep it safe, one day it might be a collectors item!

Seriously though, apologies to all North Laineites!
